Howard Margules is a photographer from Old Lyme, CT who enjoys both candid, un-posed subjects as well as landscapes. He is currently contributing images to the Spectrum Gallery for their Community Spotlight presentation featuring artists’ works in progress.
“I hope my photos can inspire both artists and non-artists alike to get out of the house, while still maintaining social distancing, and seek out beauty and places of interest even though museums, and galleries are closed. We live in a unique area with an abundance of natural and man-made beauty that is easily accessible. People can jump in their cars and go exploring. Hopefully, artists will find places of inspiration, and others will witness memorable scenes and frame them in their minds. Families can turn it into a game where they vote on what was the most beautiful or inspirational scene they discovered that day.”
Howard became an Elected Artist member at MMoA in 2018.
About the Artist
Howard dabbled in photography for several years, but his interest peaked when he had an opportunity to live in China where every day offered unique visual experiences which he sought to capture. He shoots a wide range of subjects, but favors portrait photography. He prefers candid, un-posed subjects because he believes they produce a more authentic rendition. His goal is to render subjects as they see themselves, and he aspires to promote feelings and leave the viewer alone to make what they will of them. His inspiration comes from the iconic street photographers especially Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Dorothea Lange. He too strives to capture the “decisive moment and emulate Lange’s approach: “The contemplation of things that are, without error or confusion, without substitution or imposture, is a nobler thing than a whole harvest of invention.”
Howard has won numerous awards including ‘Best In Show” awards in Connecticut and in China. His images have been displayed in juried shows including The Connecticut Association of Photographers Top Of Connecticut show, the Mystic Museum Of Art (elected artist) Photo Show and their Regional Art Show, The Slater Museum’s Annual Connecticut Juried Art Show, The F Stops Here Show, Images, Essex Art Association (elected artist and Elected Artist Show Chair) Light on Westbrook, the Lyme Land Trust, Connecticut Valley Camera Club and the Coastal Camera Club. He has had solo shows at the Essex Library and the Madison Art Cinemas.
He is a founding board member of the Global Institute for The Arts and Leadership. He belongings to the Connecticut Valley Camera Club. He has performed volunteer photography for High Hopes and The Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts. He was the 2017 Co-Chair of the Hamburg Fair photography contest, and he has served as a camera club judge.
“During this limited exhibition season, I participated in the 76 Annual Connecticut Artist Exhibition at the Slater Museum and MMoA’s Annual Members and Elected Artist Exhibition.”
