COVID has been hard on all of us, for myriad reasons: isolation, anxiety, and, for far too many, overwhelming loss. While the future remains uncertain, things are starting to return to a kind of normal—including a themed, regional juried exhibition at MMoA!
To celebrate our survival in the wake of so much hardship and loss, the theme of the Mystic Museum of Art 2021 regional exhibition is FLOURISH.
The verb “to flourish” means to thrive or prosper. As a noun, a flourish is also a bold or sweeping gesture, a profusion, an embellishment. Mystic has reclaimed its stature as a flourishing tourism destination; the hydrangeas this year are a flourish of color thanks to a rainy spring and summer; the historic architecture downtown is full of decorative flourishes like cornices, finials, and carved pineapples. The triumphant return of MMoA’s exuberant summer campers is replete with flourishing art projects created with clever flourishes of details.
Open to a thousand interpretations, from personal struggles overcoming the last 18 months to the beauty of the natural world outside our windows, this call to artists is open to all media, including photography.
Entry forms may be filled out and submitted online prior to in-person receiving dates of September 17 and 18. Artists are encouraged to include a short statement (100 words or less) of their interpretation of the exhibition theme to be included on the labels of accepted works.
