  • Wednesday's, 6:30 - 8:30pm, 9/26 to 10/24 Develop your ability to draw realistically. Learn the basics, including set up, composition, observation skills, and techniques to sharpen your accuracy in graphite drawing. Gain knowledge of the physics of shadows and light sources, measuring distances accurately, and how to render a variety of shading techniques to achieve different textures.
  • Thursday's, 6:30 - 8:30pm, 9/27 to 10/25 The human face is endless in its variation and possibilities. Working from quick studies and longer poses, students will systematically learn the “landscape” of the human face. Systematically learn the steps for capturing accurate anatomical features, hone your fundamental drawing technique,s and develop observational skills. Weekly demonstrations and drills will train students to see proportions, planes, and values. A model will be provided each week.
  • Thursday's, 6:30 - 8:30pm, 11/1 to 12/13 Learn the classical way to draw realistically as it has been taught for centuries. Working with charcoal and pencil, students will learn the skill set of the great masters. Using the Bargue Method, students will practice copying a reference as accurately as possible. Further advance your skills using plaster cast reproductions to observe seeing distances, lengths and angles as well as how light hits the surface.
  • Monday's, 10am - 12pm, 10/1 to 10/29 Bring a sense of spontaneity to your art as you free yourself and explore landscape painting in an emotionally expressive way. Discover a new approach to intuitive painting using movement, shapes, patterns, form, and layered colors. This course tackles the abstract language, strategies, and skills to create a personal and convincing work of art. Experiment with different concepts and techniques using your choice of acrylics or oils.
  • Wednesday's, 9am - 12pm, 9/19 to 10/24 Have you always wanted to paint great looking seascapes with lots of depth and atmosphere? Or learn how to paint a crashing wave or accurately render the proportions of a sailboat? What better place to capture the nautical spirit than in Mystic? This class will cover the basic principles of painting with regard to seascapes, coastlines, and boats. Students are welcome to paint in either oils or acrylics.
  • Monday's, 6pm - 9pm, 10/1 to 10/29 Sometimes something so simple can create a profound statement. The essence of each study requires mindfulness and discipline to yield an awakening of imagination and spirit. Through twists, rolls, presses, releases, drags, and dots, the brush produces a flower’s curling petal, a butterfly in flight, a fish gliding through water, or the precipitous drop of a waterfall tumbling down a mountain side. Traditional watercolor techniques may be the end goal for some students, where for others it will be a leaping off point or an experience to inform their work in other media.
  • Monday's, 6:30pm - 8:30pm, 10/15 to 11/12 Working in watercolors, students learn the skills for accurately rendering a floral still life. Basic classical painting concepts will be explored as well as techniques specific to this genre such as composition, using a tonal value range to create depth and dimension, focal point development, color harmony, highlighting and shading, building texture and learning to see both positive and negative shapes. Demonstrations and individualized guidance will be offered.
  • Saturday's, 9:30am - 12:30pm, 10/20 to 11/17 "Still Life is the touchstone of painting.” Edouard Manet
  • Monday, 6pm - 9pm, 11/19 Learn to make a variety of marks using a palette knife, adding contrast and dimension to your canvases. Palette painting can be an easy, rewarding way to cover a lot of ground in portraits, still lifes or landscapes. Repeat students can hone their skills.
  • Thursday, 6pm - 9pm, 12/13 Learn simple techniques for mixing colors, matching hues and determining values of hues, expanding beyond a standard color wheel. Balance colors to make your paintings more harmonious. Practice using your new color wheel to create rapidly a series of small paintings. This is a foundational class appropriate for painters of all levels and styles, working in acrylic or oils.
  • Wednesday's, 6:30pm - 8:30pm, 9/5 to 9/26 Bring your favorite photographs and learn how to create a work of art in acrylic or oils. Instructor demonstrations focus on design, composition and value. Previous painting experience recommended.

  • Thursday's, 9:30am - 12:30pm, 9/6 to 9/27 Bring your favorite photographs and learn how to create a work of art in acrylic or oils. Instructor demonstrations focus on design, composition and value. Previous painting experience recommended.
  • Thursday's, 9:30am - 12:30pm, 10/18 to 11/15 Bring your favorite photographs and learn how to create a work of art in acrylic or oils. Instructor demonstrations focus on design, composition and value. Previous painting experience recommended.
  • Thursday's, 9:30am - 12:30pm, 12/6 to 12/20 Bring your favorite photographs and learn how to create a work of art in acrylic or oils. Instructor demonstrations focus on design, composition and value. Previous painting experience recommended.
  • Tuesday's, 6:30- 8:30pm, 9/25 to 10/23 Learn the basics of digital photography including composition, exposure, white balance, and depth of field using your digital SLR or point-and-shoot camera with manual capabilities. Discover how aperture, shutter speed, and ISO work together to create an image. Topics covered include nature, portrait, and action photography. A digital camera with full manual controls is required.
  • Tuesday's, 6:30- 8:30pm, 10/30 to 12/4 Delve into composition, lighting, flash, and specialized photography to enhance the images you create. This class will also introduce you to photo editing software and techniques, including Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, and shooting in RAW. Students must have taken either Digital Photography I or know how to use their cameras in full manual mode. A recent version of Photoshop (Elements 9 or newer or Adobe Photo Plan) installed on a laptop is required for these classes. You can sign up for the Adobe Photography plan for a fee at www.adobe.com. Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Bridge must be installed prior to coming to class.
  • Mix cocktails and creativity for your next happy hour. Take on a creative project with one of our instructors as you learn to play and experiment with a variety of media. We provide instruction, supplies, a tasty beverage (signature Martini, Wine, Beer, Non-alcoholic) and plenty of time to socialize with friends.
  • Thursday, 10/25 Design a personalized set of stationary to commemorate the beauty of the Fall season.
  • Thursday, 11/15 Using polymer colored clay, design, create and bake beads, earrings, keychains, or your choice of an accessary piece that can be used as a holiday gift for someone special (maybe that person is YOU).
  • Thursday, 12/20 Using polymer colored clay, design, create and bake Take a guided lesson to turn a blank canvas into a winter themed masterpiece. Using acrylics, paint your way to success by following step-by-step instruction.

    Inspire your child’s imagination and interest in art with fun educational projects in drawing, painting, and mixed media. Students learn fundamental art concepts and art vocabulary.
  • Tuesday's, 4:15 - 5:45pm, 9/11 There’s nothing quite like painting in the fresh air. Weather permitting, we will take our canvas and paints outside on the grounds of MMoA and practice painting our beautiful Mystic River.
  • Tuesday's, 4:15 - 5:45pm, 9/18 Form a decorative bowl using air-dry clay. Discover the many tools to add texture and detail to your sculptural piece.
  • Tuesday's, 4:15 - 5:45pm, 9/25 How would you paint a moving pinwheel or fluttering butterfly? Learn ways to draw and paint objects in motion.
  • Tuesday's, 4:15 - 5:45pm, 10/2 This class combines simple beginner yoga, creative movement, and mindfulness-based art in a fun and supportive environment.
  • Tuesday's, 4:15 - 5:45pm, 10/9 Discover how artists use the brilliance of metallics to add shimmer and shine to an art piece. Be inspired by artists like Gustav Klimpt and create a painting “reflective” of their style.
  • Tuesday's, 4:15 - 5:45pm, 10/16 Learn the basic skills of applying and manipulating watercolors to create Fall themed art. See the surprising effects of adding lemon juice and salt to your painting.
  • Tuesday's, 4:15 - 5:45pm, 10/23 Explore your artistic and poetic side. Using old pages of a book as our surface, students will draw on top of the words to leave behind a “refurbished” poem. What mark will you leave behind?
  • Tuesday's, 4:15 - 5:45pm, 10/30 Using found objects such as buttons, golf balls, lids, and popsicle sticks, students assemble and spray paint their modern creations.
  • Tuesday's, 4:15 - 5:45pm, 11/6 Using collage techniques and drawing skills, students design a habitat for their animal of choice. Will you design a realistic or wacky world? The choice is all yours.
  • Tuesday's, 4:15 - 5:45pm, 11/13 Students learn about atmospheric perspective by painting a mountainous landscape. See how altering the value of a color can achieve depth in art.
  • Tuesday's, 4:15 - 5:45pm, 11/20 Practice drawing a self-portrait in the style of Paul Klee and add a colorful overlay using bleeding tissue paper (no band-aids needed).
  • Tuesday's, 4:15 - 5:45pm, 12/4 Bad dreams be gone! Using sticks, string and decorative fabric, young artists construct and weave a beautiful piece of art to hang in their room or to be given as a gift.
  • Tuesday's, 4:15 - 5:45pm, 12/11 Inspired by the work of Henry Moore, students use a block of foam and discover how to carve out an abstracted 3D form.

  • Monday's 4:30 - 5:30pm Inspire your young artist by introducing them to the world of art. Explore a variety of media and processes through projects that stimulate imagination and creativity
  • Monday's, 4:30 - 5:30pm, 9/10 Students create decorative abstract tiles using markers and rubbing alcohol. The effects of mixing these materials together is simply fascinating. Turn them into a beautiful mosaic or use them as a functional set of coasters.
  • Monday's, 4:30 - 5:30pm, 9/17 Get inspired by the bright colors and bold shapes of Henri Matisse and learn the steps to reproduce one of his famous artworks. (Hint… what swims in a fishbowl?)
  • Monday's, 4:30 - 5:30pm, 9/24 Put your personal mark on it... literally. Will they become leaves on a tree? A bunch of balloons? Birds on a wire? Turn your fingerprint into a work of art by adding detail.

  • Monday's, 4:30 - 5:30pm, 10/29 Celebrate this vibrant holiday by creating art that honors Hispanic culture and traditions.
  • Monday's, 4:30 - 5:30pm, 11/5 Using cardboard and other recyclables, students will have fun assembling and painting their “trashy” creations. Let’s think about our garbage in a whole new way.
  • Monday's, 4:30 - 5:30pm, 11/12 Happy or Sad? Students will create a series of 4 self-portraits, each one showing how line and color choice can affect the feel of a piece of art.
  • Monday's, 4:30 - 5:30pm, 11/19 What will your imagination do with a black dot? Will it become a balloon, flower, sun, or something else? Let’s discover how all of us see the world in a different way.
  • Monday's, 4:30 - 5:30pm, 12/3 Welcome fairies into your world by creating a magical door using colored clay and other multimedia. Keep it small so we don’t let the dragons through!
  • Monday's, 4:30 - 5:30pm, 12/10 Discover the many ways paint can be applied to a surface. Remember… artists love to get messy!
  • Monday's, 4:30 - 5:30pm, 12/17 Students paint in the whimsical and imaginative style of Joan Miro by focusing on shape formation and color choice. How will your painting tell a story?
  • Saturday's, 9:30 - 11am, 10/27 - 11/17 Using mindfulness-based techniques, yoga, creative movement and art, children will have fun and learn healthy ways to relieve stress and find focus. Utilizing both our galleries and studio space, students will blend art and yoga in a relaxing and supportive environment. Projects will include dream catchers, mantra sand art, mindful coloring, and more!
  • Wednesday's, 4:30 - 6pm, 9/5 - 10/3 Working from various sources, including still lifes and other reference material, young artists strengthen their skills in drawing and paint application. Foundational basics like form, color, space and line will be explored. The teacher encourages returning students to advance their abilities and develop their style.
  • Wednesday's, 4:30 - 6pm, 10/10 - 11/14 Students explore model making and sculpting using a variety of non-ceramic clays, plasters, wood, styrofoam, wire and other assorted multi- media. Students will study the basics of form, texture and color to turn their visions into compelling 3D creations.
  • Tuesday's, 6:30 - 8:30pm, 11/6 - 12/11 A portfolio is a body of work containing 12-20 pieces of artwork that preferably includes a variety of subjects and mediums. This class is designed for the high school student who wishes to put together an art portfolio for a future in art school. Students develop the skills needed for admissions, while building a well-rounded, competitive portfolio.

  • I understand that there are no refunds once class has started except in cases of medical or family emergencies. I will notify MMoA as soon as possible, should I need to cancel my enrollment. If this is an adult enrollment, I give permission for my photo to be used in print/on the web. Unless otherwise indicated by an instructor or staff member, all artwork created during classes must be picked up no later than 14 days after the final class session. The MMoA is not responsible for student artwork left at our facility over 14 days after a class has been completed.
