AMERICANA: 64th Annual Themed Regional Exhibition
The theme of MMoA’s 2020 open juried regional exhibition is AMERICANA.
AMERICANA refers to materials concerning, characteristic, or typical of the United States of America, its civilization, values, and culture. Consider the idiom “As American as Apple Pie”: during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, this humble dish became so synonymous with American prosperity and national pride that it became a part of the phrase “for Mom and apple pie”—the stock response supposedly given by young soldiers during WWII, when asked what they were fighting for.
The first known use of the word AMERICANA was in 1841, in the tumultuous years leading up to partisan conflicts that tore the country in half. As the USA braces itself for another divisive election year in 2020, MMoA invites artists to examine their interpretation of this term, and to create work celebrating or subverting the symbolism, culture, and traditional values associated with “Americana.” All media will be welcome. New in 2020, MMoA also requests that artists submit a short write-up (100 words or less) with their artistic submission(s), interpreting their vision for viewers.
AMERICANA will be on display for thirteen weeks, throughout the height of MMoA’s summer season, from Saturday, June 13 to Saturday, September 12, 2020.
Opening Reception: Thursday, June 18, 5:30-7pm
Exhibition Guidelines are changing in 2020. Please read the Prospectus carefully!
